About the Item
The Four Seasons, a series of framed engravings depicting allegories of the seasons, after drawings by Nicolas Vleughels.
Beneath each drawing is a title and a few verses illustrating the season, as well as the inscriptions "N Vleughels pinx" and "E Jeaurat sculp 1716."
Nicolas Vleughels was a French painter (1668-1737), a student of Pierre Mignard, close to Watteau, whose career unfolded between France and Italy.
His small paintings with mythological and historical subjects, influenced by Italian painters such as Veronese, are now visible in the collections of various museums, including the Louvre.
These representations of the four seasons offered here could represent the drawings submitted by the artist Nicolas Vleughels for the painted decoration of the dining room of the Hôtel de Crozat.
