About the Item
A macabre etching and aquatint on paper titled “Miren que grabes!” from Los Caprichos by Spanish artist Francisco Goya. Signed in the plate. Numbered 63 on the upper right corner and titled on the lower central margin. Etching is part of the Third Edition dated 1868 via tag on backing. The Caprices – “Look how serious they are! Behold their authority (or haughtiness or gravity) See how serious they are!” From a private collection. Dimensions: 13”h x 9.75”w (framed). In very good vintage condition. Francisco Goya's series Los Caprichos contains layers of meaning that even today challenge the modern viewer. In the first half, Goya explored themes of superstition, sensuality, greed, and violence with scenes set in Spanish brothels, salons, and prisons. The second half is given over to fantastic images from the artist's dreams and nightmares. Even though Goya tried to disguise his attacks on Spanish society, he withdrew the set from sale because he had been reported to the Inquisition, a tribunal that ruled with lethal authority.
Francisco Goya
Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker. He is considered the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His works often contained a social message, like in his "Disasters of War" series. Immensely successful in his lifetime, Goya is often referred to as both the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. He was also one of the great portraitists of his time.
