About the Item

François Morellet – Chartres – vert orange, 1973 This original signed and numbered limited edition silkscreen print by François Morellet (1926–2016) was created in 1973 and printed by Meissner, Hamburg. A key example of postwar European geometric abstraction and Concrete Art, this work demonstrates Morellet’s systematic approach to form, color, and optical perception. Chartres – vert orange is a silkscreen (screen print) on PVC paper, produced in an edition of 200, this example numbered 81/200. The print is hand-signed by the artist at the lower right and hand-numbered at the lower left, confirming its authenticity as an original François Morellet limited edition print. The composition presents a precise grid of alternating green and orange squares on a black ground, creating a subtle optical vibration associated with Op Art and kinetic visual effects. The title Chartres refers to the stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral in France, a major source of inspiration for Morellet. Through abstraction and repetition, the artist translates the experience of light, color, and rhythm found in stained glass into a mathematically structured visual system. This work originates from the important collective portfolio « 9 x 5 konkret. 9 Künstler. 5 Farben », featuring leading figures of Concrete and Constructivist art, including Max Bill, Getulio Alviani, and François Morellet. The portfolio represents a significant moment in European modernist printmaking of the early 1970s. Current exhibitions and shows: On the occasion of the centenary of François Morellet’s birth, numerous institutions have come together, at the initiative of the Centre Pompidou, to pay tribute to one of the most influential figures of contemporary art. Featured in the most significant French public collections and in many major international institutional collections, Morellet also left a lasting imprint on the public realm. More than one hundred of his works can be found throughout cities—on building façades, in gardens, train stations, and public squares. Through his free and playful use of the language of geometric abstraction, he created a vibrant dialogue between art, architecture, and the public. In resonance with the retrospective “François Morellet: 100 Percent,” presented at the Centre Pompidou-Metz, the Centre Pompidou has launched an ambitious nationwide program in collaboration with Studio Morellet, the Mennour gallery—representing the artist—and numerous partner institutions. Spanning the entire country, this large-scale initiative features new installations, rediscoveries of works in museum collections and public spaces, as well as a rich program of talks, lectures, and an international symposium. Its goal is to reexamine Morellet’s legacy, his place in art history, his relationship to heritage and architecture, and the enduring influence of his work on contemporary artists.
