About the Item
Frontispiece – Nederlandsche Vogelen Vol. V by Nozeman
Sepp, 1829
Original hand-coloured frontispiece from volume V of Nederlandsche Vogelen; volgens hunne huisdouding, aert, en eigenschappen beschreeven, Amsterdam, 1770–1829, by Cornelis Nozeman, Martinus Houttuyn and Jan Christiaan Sepp. This monumental series is recognised as the first and most important ornithological work published in the Netherlands, notable for its life-sized depictions and precise natural history observations.
The plate presents a lively composition of various native Dutch birds in their natural environment, arranged in an illustrative tableau around a tree and water setting, with eggs and vegetation. As the introductory plate to the fifth volume, it served both as an artistic showcase and a thematic opening to the continuation of the series.
Artists and engravers: Christiaan Andreas Sepp, Jan Christiaan Sepp, Jan Sepp, Cornelis Nozeman, Martinus Houttuyn and Coenraad Jacob Temminck.
Condition: Good. Some marginal staining and foxing. General age-related toning. Please study the image carefully.
Framing tips: A soft cream or light ivory mount will harmonise with the warm tones of the birds and vegetation while brightening the overall image. A mid-tone walnut or light oak frame will enhance the natural history feel, while a dark mahogany or black frame with a thin gold slip will give a more formal, gallery-quality presentation. Consider UV-protective glass to prevent fading of the delicate hand-colouring.

View AllAntique Bird Print of the Certhia by Sepp
Nozeman, 1770
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique print titled 'Certhia'. This print depicts certhia with nest and eggs (Dutch: Boomkruipertje). Certhia is the genus of birds containing the typical treecreepers, which together with the African and Indian spotted creepers make up the family Certhiidae. The treecreepers are small woodland birds, very similar in appearance (so they can present serious identification problems where two species occur together). They are brown with streaks above and white below. They have thin pointed down-curved bills, which they use to extricate insects from bark. They have stiff, pointed tail feathers, like woodpeckers and woodcreepers, which they use to support themselves on vertical trees...

Dutch Kolf Print, Vuë De Santvliet Village De Hollande, Golf Engraving
Located in Oxfordshire, GB
Dutch Golf Engraving By Jacques-Philippe Lebas, Vuë De Santvliet Village De Hollande.
Rare 18th century Dutch golf engraving by Jacques-Philippe Lebas depicting Dutchman playing the early form of golf on the ice. The Kolf engraving is entitled 'Vuë De Santvliet Village De Hollande' (View Of Santvliet Village From Holland). The scene shows a group of four Dutch gentlemen in the foreground playing kolf, the forerunner of golf. There are people skating on the ice and a gentleman can be seen kneeling whilst fitting on his ice skates. Paintings of life on the frozen waterways of Holland were very popular and many artists, usually known for painting rivers or landscapes, produced them.
