About the Item

Gaulish Domestic Life and Society, France Before Roman Conquest, ca. 1860 A rare and highly decorative pair of original 19th-century hand-colored engravings illustrating daily life and social structure in ancient Gaul prior to Roman domination. These plates originate from the French historical series Costumes civils et militaires des Français à travers les siècles, published in Paris by F. Roy and based on archaeological sources, classical texts, and museum collections. Note: The work is offered unframed, enabling custom framing to personal or interior preferences. The two plates form a complementary narrative ensemble focused on Gaulish domestic interiors, rural life, and social hierarchy, moving beyond military imagery to depict everyday existence. Plate No. 5 Original French title: Intérieur d’habitation gauloise English translation: Interior of a Gaulish dwelling Additional source text translated: “Based on documents from the Column of Antoninus and the Vatican Museum, according to Strabo, Diodorus, and Caesar.” This richly detailed scene shows the interior of a Gaulish house with multiple figures gathered around a hearth. Men, women, and a child are shown engaged in domestic activity, with cooking vessels, tools, shields, and animals integrated into the setting. The composition offers valuable insight into housing construction, clothing, furniture, and family life in pre-Roman Gaul. Plate No. 6 Original French title: Habitation gauloise – Femme – Paysan Char Riche fermier Harnais English translation: Gaulish habitation – Woman – Peasant Cart Wealthy farmer Harness Additional source text translated: “Based on the Column of Antoninus and a bas-relief from the Louvre (woman and peasant). Cart after a bas-relief from Dijon. Wealthy farmer after a statuette from the Musée de Saint-Germain. Harness after a bas-relief from Pompée and Voisin.” This plate presents a broader outdoor view of Gaulish rural society, showing a peasant woman, a farmer, a cart drawn by a horse, and a well-dressed wealthy landowner. Together, the figures illustrate class distinctions, agricultural transport, and costume variations, making this an especially informative and visually balanced composition. Offered together, these two engravings form an exceptional thematic pair devoted to civilian life in ancient Gaul. Their shared format, coloring, and scholarly foundation make them far stronger as a set than as individual sheets, appealing equally to collectors of early European history, archaeology, and decorative historical prints. Condition: Good antique condition overall. Light age toning and scattered foxing consistent with 19th-century paper. Minor edge wear and soft creases, mainly in the margins. Images remain clear and attractively hand colored. No restorations observed. Framing suggestions: Ideally framed as a coordinated pair. Warm walnut, dark oak, or ebonized frames work well. Use generous ivory or light cream mats to balance the aged paper tone and emphasize the narrative detail. Museum glass recommended. Technique: Engraving with original hand coloring Maker: F. Roy (éditeur), Paris, circa 1860
