About the Item

German Romantic Book Engravings, Narrative Scenes, Minerva Taschenbuch 1813 Description: This engraved narrative sheet was published in 1813 as part of the German Taschenbuch Minerva, a literary annual known for its refined combination of text and illustration. The sheet presents multiple scenes arranged in sequence, illustrating themes of drama, conflict, and resolution typical of Romantic storytelling. Executed in copper engraving, the imagery reflects early 19th-century German graphic style, favoring expressive figures and theatrical composition. Sheets of this type were often later divided, making intact examples increasingly uncommon. Condition Report: Period-mounted engravings on paper. Mount unevenly trimmed, with light age toning and handling wear. The engraved scenes remain clear and visually strong. Framing Tips: Best presented as a single composition. A restrained mat and darker frame will emphasize the engraved imagery. Technique: Copper engraving Maker: Anonymous engraver, Germany, published 1813

Jean-Emile Buland studied under the painter Alexandre Cabanel and the engraver Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont. He won the 1st Grand Prix de Rome for engraving in 1880.
