The composition captures the splendor and vastness of the Mughal court, portraying bustling activity around the mosque, palace gardens, ceremonial grounds, and richly adorned architecture.
Published in 1719 as part of Atlas Historique by Henri Abraham Chatelain, this plate reflects the European fascination with the exotic grandeur of the East during the early 18th century. The Chatelain family—Henri Abraham, his father Zacharie, and brother Zacharie Jr.—produced some of the most ambitious historical atlases of their time, blending scholarly content with decorative appeal. Their works served not only as cartographic records but also as visual encyclopedias of global cultures, royal courts, religions, and customs.
This particular engraving provides more than a topographical view—it is a dynamic narrative of life in the imperial Mughal palace.
