About the Item
Greek-Roman Wall Fresco Print – Antique Lithograph of Classical Interior, c.1869
This striking chromolithograph from the 19th century captures the elegance and theatricality of Greco-Roman interior design. Plate VIII from L'Ornement Polychrome, it presents a meticulously reconstructed wall painting or architectural elevation based on archaeological discoveries from sites like Pompeii and Herculaneum, where ancient frescoes were unearthed in vivid condition.
At the center of the composition is a beautifully detailed wall niche with fluted Corinthian columns, elaborate entablature, and ornamental moldings, all rendered in classical symmetry and pastel tones. Within the central panel, a dancing female figure in flowing golden drapery seems to emerge from a dark background, her graceful pose recalling Roman wall paintings celebrating mythological or festive subjects. Above her, another circular panel features a flying putto bearing a torch, evoking themes of divine love or celebration.
The architecture depicted here reflects Roman interpretations of Greek design principles, characterized by refined proportions, polychrome surfaces, and symbolic decor. Garlands, lion masks, griffins, and stylized foliage embellish the scene, blending theatrical illusion with religious and decorative function. This type of painted architectural fantasy would have been found in elite Roman villas, designed to impress visitors and elevate the surroundings with scenes of luxury and myth.
Published around 1869 by Firmin-Didot in Paris, this plate was lithographed by Sulpis and Duran after the historical reconstructions compiled by Albert-Charles-Auguste Racinet. It was printed using the chromolithographic process, which allowed for nuanced layering of color, making it possible to reproduce the original vibrancy of Roman wall painting.
This image offers a rare view into classical interior aesthetics and was part of a movement in 19th-century Europe to study and revive ancient decorative forms, which went on to influence Neoclassical and Beaux-Arts styles in architecture and design.
