About the Item

Grimaces Pl. 2 – Female Emotions, Boilly Satirical Heads, c.1823 Description: This plate presents a lively study of female facial expressions, rendered with humour, sensitivity, and keen observation. Boilly balances caricature with empathy, creating figures that are expressive without becoming grotesque. As part of the Grimaces series, this work reflects early 19th-century interest in emotion, gender, and character. It pairs exceptionally well with the male expression plates. Condition report: Light overall toning and occasional minor spotting. Good impression. Framing tips: A light wood or muted gold frame with a warm white mat complements the softer palette. Technique: Lithograph with contemporary hand-colouring Maker: Louis-Léopold Boilly, France, published London c.1823–28
