Description:
This mixed-gender composition brings together a variety of expressions, allowing direct comparison between male and female emotional representation. Boilly’s observational brilliance is evident in the subtle distinctions between characters.
An excellent example of Boilly’s physiognomic approach, this plate works particularly well in dialogue with other Grimaces images.
Condition report:
Light toning and minor spotting consistent with age.
Framing tips:
Neutral contemporary framing works well, especially for salon-style groupings.
