About the Item
"London, E. Orme, (1813). Hand-Coloured Aquatint 'American Anecdote Wolves
Boy' by Dubourg, Merke
Howitt, from 'Foreign Field Sports'"
Description:
This detailed hand-coloured aquatint, titled "American Anecdote Wolves
Boy," was published in London by E. Orme in 1813. Part of the series 'Foreign Field Sports', this print is vividly brought to life by the expert colouring of Dubourg, Merke
Howitt, based on designs by Howitt
Clark.
The scene captures a dramatic moment where a young boy is chased by a pack of wolves through a dense forest. The boy, depicted in mid-run, looks back in fear as the wolves, emerging from behind a large, gnarled tree, pursue him with intent. The lush, detailed foliage and the dynamic composition highlight the tension and danger of the scene. The use of hand-colouring adds depth and realism, emphasizing the peril faced by the boy and the wild nature of the wolves.
This print not only showcases the artistic skill of early 19th-century British aquatint creators but also offers a thrilling narrative that evokes the adventurous spirit of the era. It is a significant piece for collectors interested in historical prints, wildlife art, and early American folklore.
Story related to this print:
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”
He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
