About the Item
19th-Century Hand-Coloured Jousting Scene with Vibrant Striped and Floral Caparisons
This magnificent original hand-coloured lithograph, produced in 1842, offers a captivating glimpse into the splendid world of medieval-style tournaments. It is drawn from the esteemed publication *Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums*, published in Stuttgart by Carl Hoffmann, with the collaborative vision of artist Friedrich Martin von Reibisch and historian Dr. Franz Kottenkamp. Their work sought to authentically depict the pageantry, attire, and heraldic traditions that defined Europe’s chivalric age.
Here, two knights face each other at the tilt, each mounted on a meticulously adorned warhorse. On the left, the horse’s caparison is boldly striped in vibrant hues of green, pink, white, and gold, reflecting a sense of youthful energy and audacious style. On the right, the opposing knight rides a steed clothed in a sumptuous yellow caparison scattered with delicate floral motifs, each blossom exquisitely hand-coloured. The riders themselves wear ornate helmets and protective armor, their lances poised and ready, while one figure makes a dramatic gesture with his arm—perhaps a signal, a challenge, or a display of bravado.
The lithograph’s hand-applied colouring remains remarkably vivid for its age, and only minor age toning and subtle creasing attest to its 19th-century origin. These gentle marks of time do not detract from the overall clarity and impact of this superb piece. Collectors of medieval history, historical costume, or equestrian themes will find this print a rare and treasured addition to their collections. Its combination of artistic craftsmanship, historical authenticity, and rich visual storytelling makes it an exceptional acquisition and a conversation-worthy centerpiece in any refined setting.
