About the Item

19th-Century Hand-Coloured Print of Knights with Heraldic Banner in Mounted Combat This original, hand-coloured lithograph dates from 1842 and beautifully captures the spectacle and symbolism of a knightly encounter. It was published as part of the renowned work "Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums," produced in Stuttgart by the publishing house of Carl Hoffmann. Under the skilled artistry of Friedrich Martin von Reibisch and guided by the historical expertise of Dr. Franz Kottenkamp, this publication aimed to faithfully present the arms, attire, and traditions of chivalry as they were understood in the 19th century. In this particular scene, two mounted knights face one another, each displaying distinctive heraldic devices. The knight on the left, poised with lance in hand, bears a vibrant banner emblazoned with an eagle—a symbol often associated with imperial authority or noble lineage. His armor and steed are complemented by warm gold and red accents. Opposite him, the other knight, clad in chainmail and raising his sword, wears a surcoat of red and white. Both horses, depicted with careful anatomical precision, convey motion and tension through their dynamic poses. The delicate hand-colouring highlights every contour of the armor’s fluting, the gleam of the bridles, and the subtle shading of horseflesh. Though nearly two centuries old, the print remains in very good condition. Minor creases and faint toning attest to its genuine age and provenance, while the clarity of the lines and the depth of the colours have been remarkably preserved. This rare piece will appeal to collectors of medieval history, historical costume, and equestrian-themed art. Its combination of authenticity, decorative appeal, and cultural insight makes it a valuable addition to any discerning collection or refined interior setting.
