About the Item
Healing of a Possessed Man
Calling of the Apostles, Pieter Mortier, ca. 1700
Original antique engraving from Histoire du Vieux et du Nouveau Testament, published in Amsterdam by Pieter Mortier around 1700. This plate combines two Gospel episodes, both centered on Christ’s power to heal and to call followers to his mission.
The upper scene depicts the Healing of a Possessed Man (Matthew IX, 32–34). A man tormented by a demon is brought before Christ, who raises his hand in calm authority to cast out the spirit. The healed man kneels in gratitude while disciples and onlookers stand in awe. The outdoor setting, framed by trees and a mountainous horizon, reflects the natural simplicity of Christ’s ministry, while the clear contrast between the afflicted man and the composed figure of Christ emphasizes the miracle.
The lower scene illustrates the Calling of the Apostles (Matthew X, 1–4). Christ, standing in the midst of his disciples, addresses them with authority as he appoints them to continue his mission. The apostles gather around attentively, their varied gestures and expressions conveying both humility and resolve. The background of trees and sky frames the gathering in a timeless, pastoral landscape.
Together, these engravings highlight Christ’s dual role as healer and teacher, affirming both his divine authority over sickness and his power to inspire human discipleship. Mortier’s engravers combined detailed figural composition with expressive gestures to capture the essence of these Gospel accounts.
Condition report:
Very good condition. Strong, sharp impression with wide margins. Minor toning and faint foxing at edges, with slight handling marks consistent with age. The engraved lines remain crisp and detailed.
Framing tips:
A cream or light parchment mat with two openings will emphasize the narrative sequence of healing and teaching. A dark wooden frame provides solemnity, while a gilt frame adds luminosity and highlights the divine authority of Christ in both episodes.
