This detailed lithograph represents the Scala Santa, the Holy Stairs housed near the Basilica of St John Lateran. The composition shows the richly decorated interior with sculptural figures flanking the staircase, while pilgrims ascend in devotion. Philippe Benoist captures both the architectural solemnity and the religious intensity of the site.
Issued in Paris between 1867 and 1869, this plate forms part of the monumental “Rome dans sa Grandeur” series. The Scala Santa was believed to be the staircase climbed by Christ in Jerusalem and transported to Rome in antiquity, making it one of the city’s most revered pilgrimage destinations.
