About the Item
Title Page – Boilly, Humorous Designs, Satirical Lithograph, c.1823
Description:
This lithograph is the original English title page for Humorous Designs, the celebrated satirical series by Louis-Léopold Boilly, published in London by E.
C. McLean between circa 1823 and 1828. The title introduces the themes that define the series: exaggerated facial expression, social satire, and the contemporary fascination with physiognomy—the belief that inner character could be read through outward appearance.
Boilly was one of the pioneers of lithography in France and among its most brilliant practitioners. His expressive heads, drawn from acute observation of everyday Parisian life, became hugely influential and were widely admired for their wit, psychological insight, and technical finesse. The English publication of these designs reflects their immediate international appeal.
As the title plate, this sheet serves as a conceptual and visual anchor for the series and is particularly sought after by collectors assembling or displaying Boilly’s works as a group.
Condition report:
Light overall toning and occasional minor spotting, consistent with age. Margins ample. No major defects observed.
Framing tips:
A classic black or dark walnut frame with an ivory or warm white mat emphasises the graphic clarity. For collectors, framing to show the full sheet including margins is recommended.
