About the Item
Imperial Guard Foot Artillery and Train, Napoleonic Military Print c1843
This finely hand-coloured 19th-century engraving depicts members of the Imperial Guard artillery during the Napoleonic era, showing both a mounted officer and a foot artilleryman with equipment from the artillery train. The scene illustrates the essential logistical and firepower backbone of Napoleon Bonaparte’s Grande Armée, where artillery was regarded as the decisive arm of warfare and personally favored by Napoleon, himself trained as an artillery officer.
The composition highlights the contrast between the mounted officer, seated calmly on his horse, and the standing artilleryman equipped for active service. Their uniforms are rendered with great precision, from the tall shakos with red plumes to the carefully detailed belts, sabres, packs, and artillery implements. The horse and terrain are treated with equal care, reinforcing the sense of readiness and discipline that defined the Imperial Guard, Napoleon’s elite formation reserved for critical moments of battle.
This print originates from *Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon* by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, published in Paris in 1843. The illustration is after Horace Vernet, the foremost military artist of 19th-century France, celebrated for his authoritative depictions of Napoleonic campaigns and uniforms. Vernet’s work shaped how generations visualized Napoleon’s army, combining historical accuracy with strong visual clarity and narrative presence.
Produced during the mid-19th-century revival of interest in Napoleonic history, this engraving served both as historical documentation and as a decorative work for collectors and admirers of the Empire. Today, it is particularly appealing to collectors of Napoleonic militaria, French military history, and equestrian or artillery-themed prints, and it displays well individually or as part of a grouped Imperial Guard series.
Condition report:
Good overall condition. Light age toning and scattered foxing, mostly confined to the margins. Hand colouring remains vivid and well preserved. No major tears or losses. Full margins.
Framing tips:
A dark wood or black frame with a light cream mat will enhance the contrast of the uniforms and emphasize the formal military character. Especially effective when paired with other Imperial Guard or artillery prints from the same series.
