About the Item
Infanterie de Ligne 1808, Grenadier and Voltigeur, Napoleonic Print
This finely hand-coloured 19th-century engraving depicts two soldiers of the French line infantry in 1808, shown as a Grenadier and a Voltigeur in conversation. Both figures wear full campaign equipment, including muskets, packs, and shakos with distinctive plumes, illustrating the contrast between these two elite infantry types within Napoleon Bonaparte’s Grande Armée. Grenadiers were chosen for strength and experience, while Voltigeurs were lighter, more agile troops used for skirmishing and forward action.
The composition is typical of the best French military illustration of the period, combining accuracy of uniform with a natural, informal interaction between the figures. Details such as regimental colours, equipment straps, and weaponry are carefully rendered, making this print both a decorative work and a valuable visual reference for Napoleonic uniforms. The subtle landscape setting keeps the focus firmly on the soldiers while suggesting active service conditions.
This print originates from *Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon* by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, published in Paris in 1843 and illustrated after designs by Horace Vernet. Vernet was the leading military painter of his generation and played a central role in shaping the 19th-century visual memory of Napoleon and his army. Although published decades after the events depicted, the series reflects the strong revival of interest in Napoleonic history during the July Monarchy and is noted for its high artistic and documentary quality.
Such prints are highly collectible today, appealing to collectors of Napoleonic history, French military uniforms, and 19th-century illustrated books. This example works equally well as a standalone piece or as part of a matched group of Imperial and line infantry subjects from the same publication.
Condition report:
Good condition. Light overall age toning with scattered foxing, mainly visible in the margins. The hand colouring remains fresh and well preserved. No significant tears or losses. Margins intact.
Framing tips:
A dark wood or black frame with a light cream mat will enhance the colours of the uniforms and provide a strong visual contrast. Particularly effective when framed alongside related Napoleonic infantry or Imperial Guard prints.
