About the Item

Title: The International Rifle Match Between American and Irish Teams, Dollymount, 1875 Description: This vibrant 1875 illustration, taken from the *Illustrated London News*, depicts the historic rifle match between the American and Irish teams at Dollymount, near Dublin. The event showcases a lively scene with competitors in various shooting stances, including prone and seated positions, aiming their rifles towards distant targets. Spectators fill the background, some observing closely through telescopes, while others are seated under tents, with flags flying overhead. The match attracted significant attention as it was one of the early international rifle shooting competitions, illustrating the growing popularity of shooting sports during the late 19th century. Both teams, representing their respective countries, are intensely focused, with support teams and scorekeepers on standby. The inclusion of national symbols, such as the American flag in the background, adds to the event's importance and the spirit of international competition. The illustration captures not only the precision and discipline of the sport but also the enthusiasm of the large crowd gathered to witness the event, marking a moment of sporting history between the United States and Ireland. Dollymount is located on the northern coast of Dublin, Ireland. Specifically, it refers to an area on Bull Island, a sandy island in Dublin Bay. Dollymount Strand, the beach on Bull Island, is a well-known recreational area and was historically a popular site for events such as rifle matches and other outdoor activities in the 19th century. Today, the area remains a popular spot for beachgoers, birdwatchers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

The sport was first invented by Native Americans, who originally played it as a means to toughen braves for war or to settle tribal disputes. It was played by between 100 and 1,000 participants at a time. There were no strict boundaries and the game could cover miles and take days to complete. It was very violent with many injuries, which were sometimes fatal. The game was unknown to whites until the 17th century when a Jesuit priest observed Heron Indians playing it. He thought the stick and netting resembled the "crosier" carried by bishops during religious ceremonies, This led to the name "la crosse". A Canadian dentist standardized the rules of the game in 1867 and the 1st college team was created at New York University in 1877. The game gained national attention and popularity in 1956 when the Hall-of-Fame football player Jim Brown...
