About the Item

James Gillray (after) — “Punch Cures the Tisick, the Cholic, and the Gout” Satirical caricature from the period – Pirated American edition published by McCleary, 32 Nassau Street, New York, early 19th century. A biting medical satire emblematic of the genius of James Gillray, master of English caricature. The scene ridicules the idea that punch could serve as a miracle cure for the most common ailments of the time: cough (Tisick), colic, and gout. The exaggerated expressions of the characters embody the caricaturist's fierce criticism of the abusive therapeutic practices of the 18th century. Following Gillray's death, his works saw widespread distribution in the United States, where publishers printed copyright-free editions to meet the strong demand from the American public. McCleary was one of the most active publishers of these caricatures inspired by the original, which are now highly sought after for their historical significance. The example offered here is hand-colored in the period and presented under a cream mat in an antique gilt frame, ready for display.
