About the Item

Hand-coloured etching — Original first edition Published by Hannah Humphrey , London, 28 January 1804 27 St James’s Street This outstanding satirical print by the master caricaturist James Gillray belongs to an authentic first-edition impression, published in 1804 by his renowned publisher Hannah Humphrey. Held in institutional collections, this composition is among the most iconic illustrations of early 19th-century medical satire. It humorously and sharply critiques the therapeutic practices of the time — especially the “bleeding” procedure once considered a universal remedy. The scene depicts a hesitant practitioner about to bleed a grim patient, seated and wearing a red cap — Gillray’s caricatural style is evident in the expression and posture of the figures. The finely rendered drawing, the vibrant hand-applied colouring, and the theatrical composition underscore the high quality of this print, which remains in excellent condition. This example has been framed in England during the 1950s by London art dealers Vicars Brothers Ltd., and it is presented under a black mat within a period frame, ready to hang.
