About the Item
Knight of the Order of the Annunciation in Ceremonial Attire – 18th Century Engraving
This exquisite 18th-century hand-colored engraving depicts a Knight of the Order of the Annunciation (Ordine della Santissima Annunziata) in his ceremonial attire. Adorned with a richly embroidered blue and red cloak and a distinctive feathered hat, the knight radiates prestige and elegance. The emblematic medallion, prominently displayed on his chest, represents the order’s deep Marian devotion. His stance conveys a regal dignity, symbolic of the order’s high rank in Savoyard nobility.
This work originates from the celebrated series "Illustrations of all Spiritual and Secular Orders" (Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden), created by Christian Friedrich Schwan and published in Mannheim between 1779 and 1791. The series meticulously documents the unique attire of various chivalric and religious orders across Europe, combining historical accuracy with artistic finesse.
The engraving is an exceptional example of late 18th-century European printmaking, with vibrant watercolor embellishments that enhance its intricate details. Its historical and artistic value makes it a must-have for collectors of chivalric orders, historical costume, or fine prints.
