About the Item
La Belle Paule, Toulouse Beauty – Handcoloured Engraving, ca. 1900
Charming handcoloured engraving of 'La Belle Paule (Paule de Viguier, 1518–1610), a celebrated beauty of Toulouse, remembered in French tradition for her elegance and grace. She is shown in a flowing crimson gown with white puffed sleeves, adorned with a jewelled neckline and chain belt. Her large-brimmed hat, decorated with plumes, completes the fashionable Renaissance attire. The caption notes: Née à Toulouse en 1518.
This engraving is a ca. 1900 reprint after the series Galerie Française de Femmes Célèbres, first published in Paris in 1827. Designed by Louis Marie Lanté and engraved by Georges Jacques Gatine, the series drew on antiquarian sources collected by Roger de Gaignières, who preserved records of French noblewomen and notable historical figures.
La Belle Paule was celebrated by King Francis I and became a symbol of Toulouse society in the 16th century, remembered in poetry and local lore. The image captures the refinement and opulence of her style, making it both a decorative print and a reference to Renaissance fashion.
Condition: Very good. General light age toning with a few small margin spots, not affecting the image. Strong hand colouring and well-defined impression. Blank verso.
Framing tips: An ivory or cream mount will highlight the brightness of the sleeves, while a gilt or warm-toned wood frame will enhance the deep red of the gown and the feathered hat. A narrow red or gold inner line could echo the costume’s rich detailing.
Technique: Handcoloured engraving
Maker: Georges Jacques Gatine after Louis Marie Lanté, reprint Paris, ca. 1900
