About the Item

From Paris to the French Riviera in One Night André-Emile (Émile-André) Schefer was a French painter, graphic artist, and poster designer. Schefer focused almost exclusively on trains, train stations, and technical subjects. He was therefore known as the “Painter of Machines” or the “First Painter of the Railway.” He was born and died in Paris. Sources vary regarding his birth year, ranging from 1876 to 1896. What is certain, however, is that he died in 1942 in his mid-forties in an accident (a collision with a cyclist). He worked with many techniques (watercolor, gouache, oil, drawing) and created numerous locomotive illustrations for the French railway companies. These illustrations were particularly intended for the PLM (Paris–Lyon–Méditerranée) and its advertising posters. The famous poster “La Côte d’Azur à une nuit de Paris” from 1926, like the one on your sign, advertises the night train. This train runs from Paris to the French Riviera and is one of his typical travel and railway posters. In 1928, he co-founded the Association française des amis du chemin de fer (AFAC). After his death, the “Prix Schefer” for railway art was established in his honor in France.
