About the Item

Large Antique Classical Relief Scene – Montfaucon Antiquity Explained, 1721 Description: This decorative copper engraving originates from Bernard de Montfaucon’s monumental antiquarian work Antiquity Explained and Represented in Sculptures, Volume I, published in London in 1721. The composition presents a richly populated mythological relief scene arranged in two horizontal registers, closely modeled after ancient Roman marble friezes. Montfaucon’s publication was the first systematic attempt to document and interpret classical sculpture using engraved visual evidence, making it a cornerstone of early archaeological and art-historical study. The figures shown here derive from celebrated ancient monuments and sculptural fragments then preserved in major European collections. The architectural clarity and calm classical balance give this print exceptional decorative strength, particularly suited to wide wall spaces, libraries, or refined interior settings where historical depth is valued without overt ornament. Condition: Even overall age toning, a clearly visible plate mark, and a moderately inked impression consistent with early 18th-century copper engravings. Minor surface wear and light edge handling, without losses or restorations. This engraving is sold unframed. Framing tips: Dark walnut or black frame with a generous ivory mat to emphasize the horizontal format. Technique: Copper engraving Maker: Bernard de Montfaucon, London, 1721 Keywords: Bernard de Montfaucon, Antiquity Explained, 1721, classical antiquity, Roman relief, mythological relief, antique engraving, early archaeology, classical sculpture study, Grand Tour print, 18th century antiquarian, ancient Roman art, historical engraving, classical interior art, scholarly wall art
