This remarkable stonecut/stencil image is a limited edition (#40 of 50) print on highest-quality Japanese rice paper. The title, "Large Bird in Sunlight", reflects the clever use of color characteristic of this Inuit artist, Kingmeata Etidlooie (1915-1989). She was noted for her color-field style of drawing and painting, progressing in her career from black pencils and pens to colored pencils and felt-tip pens to water colors to acrylic paints. She was an innovator in her creativity. Her style dealt with form and composition rather than with narration as seen in much Inuit art. She painted Arctic birds, animals. fish, her home and the Inuit culture. Kingmeata was one of the most accomplished members of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-Operative art studios located in the town of Cape Dorset, Nunavut, Canada. She and her husband supported themselves and their family through selling their art. Kingmeata's art is now sought-after and scarce. Over fifty of her prints were included in the annual collection of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-Operative of Cape Dorset between 1970 and 1988. She also exhibited in many group and solo shows in Europe and North America, and her art is in the permanent collection of over twenty-five museums and public galleries. This print was published in fifty copies, each one being unique due to the stonecut and stencil printing process, and was selection #31 in the 1980 Cape Dorset annual collection. Kingmeata grew up in the traditional Inuit way of seasonal living in igloo and tent, and living off the bounty of the Arctic. In the 1960's her family moved into one of the wooden houses built by the Canadian Government at Cape Dorset to stop the tuberculosis epidemic spread by igloo and tent living. This is when she began to draw and paint, never having done it before. She rapidly became one of the most active and successful artists in the Co-Operative art studios. The print is signed in Syllabics by the Inuit print-maker and it has the red igloo logo of the Cape Dorset studios. It is signed in pencil, along the bottom, by an Inuit staff member with the artist's name in Syllabics and also, in English, the title, medium, number of the print, location, date, and artist's name. This print is now framed in museum-quality mounting with low-glare, 99%-UV-blocking glass and is in a simple, textured wood frame. The frame is black with a hint of red. There is slight vertical creasing in three places of the delicate rice paper, which is typical for its age and paper type. This disappears in direct light.
