About the Item

Large Antique Engraving on Paper – Bernard Picart (1673–1733) Neptune Commands Aeolus to Calm the Waves France, Early 18th Century Important engraved print on paper depicting Neptune commanding Aeolus to calm the waves, a dramatic mythological scene taken from the decoration of the vaulted ceiling of the Great Gallery of the Palais-Royal in Paris. This powerful composition was engraved by Bernard Picart after the celebrated painting by Antoine Coypel, Premier Peintre du Roi and official painter to Philippe d’Orléans, Regent of France. The scene embodies Neptune’s divine authority over the seas, mastering the raging elements and surrounded by allegorical figures and marine deities. The expansive and theatrical composition is characteristic of French royal decorative art of the early 18th century. Picart’s refined burin engraving captures the richness of the original design with remarkable precision, conveying movement, depth, and dramatic intensity. This engraving belongs to the series representing the paintings of the vaulted ceiling of the Great Gallery of the Palais-Royal. An example is held in the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Department of Prints and Photography. The engraving is laid down (marouflaged) on its original plywood panel, a period mounting that enhances its structural stability and reflects historical presentation practices. It is sold unframed. B. Picart Sculpsit 1717” Period: 18th century Medium: Engraving on paper, laid down on original plywood panel Subject: Classical mythology, French royal decorative art, Palais-Royal Condition: Very good overall condition for an early 18th-century engraving, with original patina and minor age-related wear consistent with its age A highly decorative and scholarly work, ideal for collectors of antique prints, classical mythology, and French 18th-century art, as well as for those interested in the artistic heritage of the Palais-Royal.

Early 18th Century Dutch Landscape Painting Attributed to Théobald Michau
By Abraham Brueghel
Located in NICE, FR
This wonderful oil painting on canvas portrays a vibrant Dutch landscape and is attributed to Théobald Michau (1676-1765). It is characterised by a realistic depiction of everyday rural life in a flat Dutch landscape, emphasising intricate details of the scenery and luminism in the portrayal of light effects. The atmospheric perspective creates depth and portrays the dynamic influence of changing weather conditions in the painting, due to its use of soft colours in the background, giving the illusion of depth and distance. It is presented within a modern wooden frame and dates back to the 18th century, maintaining an impeccable condition. Théobald Michau was a Flemish painter known for his landscapes and genre paintings more famous in his own time than he is today. He began his training at the age of ten in Brussels under Lucas Achtschellinck, also a landscape painter. In 1698, he became a master in the Guild of Brussels, and in 1710, he was elected as a member of the Guild of Antwerp. He is considered a follower of Flemish landscape masters of the 17th century, such as Jan Brueghel the Elder...
