About the Item

Large Mezzotint of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo German Print, c1850 A dramatic large-format mezzotint depicting Napoleon Bonaparte during the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815. The scene shows the collapse of the French lines: wounded officers, fallen cavalry, and desperate infantry surround Napoleon as he sits mounted amid the chaos of the battlefield. The emotional intensity and deep tonal contrasts are characteristic of the heroic-historical mezzotints produced in German-speaking Europe during the mid-19th century. This richly printed sheet captures the theatrical grandeur associated with Napoleon’s final battle and reflects a period of strong popular interest in heroic military subjects. Works like this were issued for domestic display and remain highly decorative for interiors inspired by the 19th century, military history, or the Napoleonic era. Condition: Fair. Strong impression; margins in distressed condition with tears, folds, edge losses and scattered foxing; image area largely clean and stable. Suitable for conservation framing. Framing: Best floated in a deep shadow-box frame to preserve the character of the wide margins; black, charcoal, or dark walnut moulding recommended. Museum glass suggested to enhance contrast and protect the mezzotint surface. Keywords: Napoleon print, Battle of Waterloo, 1815 mezzotint, Napoleonic war art, German historical print, large military engraving, Bonaparte portrait, antique battlefield scene, 19th century military decor, heroic history engraving. Technique: Mezzotint Maker: German school, after a 19th-century painting of Waterloo
