About the Item

Title: Last Supper Engraving – Luke XXII Institution of Lord’s Supper c.1735 Description: This dramatic antique engraving titled “Institution of the Lord’s Supper” illustrates the Last Supper as described in St. Luke Chapter XXII, Verse 19, where Jesus breaks bread and gives it to his disciples, instituting the Eucharist. Created circa 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving captures the intimate yet profound moment of Christ’s final meal before his crucifixion. At the centre, Jesus sits at a table surrounded by his disciples, a radiant halo encircling his head as he blesses the bread and wine. His right hand is raised in benediction, while his left hand gestures toward the chalice before him, symbolising the establishment of the new covenant. The disciples are shown in varied poses of contemplation, conversation, and quiet reverence, each figure rendered with individualised expressions conveying devotion, wonder, and sorrow. The background features classical architectural elements including columns, arches, and a large open book on a stand illuminated by a candle, suggesting scriptural fulfilment. The meticulous engraving technique uses fine linear detailing, cross-hatching, and tonal shading to create depth, dramatic lighting, and intricate drapery folds typical of early 18th-century Bible illustrations. Though unsigned, it is stylistically aligned with works after designs by Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart, widely used in English folio Bibles as theological teaching tools and devotional illustrations. Collectors value such engravings for their religious, historical, and artistic significance, offering insight into Protestant visual theology, biblical illustration traditions, and the devotional life of the early modern household. Condition summary: Good condition with light age toning and minor foxing, mainly in the margins. Plate impression remains strong with engraved details crisp and well preserved. Slight edge wear consistent with age, no major tears or losses. Framing tips: Frame this engraving in a dark wood or black moulding featuring a gold inner edge to enhance its classical ecclesiastical presentation. Use a warm ivory or cream mount board to harmonise with the aged paper tones. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve the engraving’s fine line work and prevent further paper ageing. This print will display beautifully in a study, library, dining area, or gallery wall of biblical prints, adding historical depth, narrative resonance, and devotional reflection to any collection.
