About the Item
L’Attente – 19th Century French Lithograph of a Woman at the Fountain, circa 1840
This graceful 19th-century French lithograph titled L’Attente (translated: “The Waiting”) captures a young woman in a moment of calm expectation. Dressed in a softly flowing gown with a fitted bodice and puffed sleeves, she stands by a rural fountain, one hand gently lifting her skirt, the other resting on the stonework. A water jug is placed beneath the spout as a thin stream flows into it, suggesting that the act of drawing water has paused—symbolizing perhaps a more personal pause in her life as she awaits someone or something.
The print was drawn and lithographed by Lemercier à Paris, one of the leading lithographic studios of the 19th century, known for their refined technique and widespread production of genre scenes, portraits, and allegorical works. The image reflects the Romantic and sentimental tendencies of the period, where rural life and female figures were idealized and used to convey quiet emotion and narrative suggestion.
L’Attente is not a grand historical or religious scene, but a poetic moment of everyday life, delicately framed and thoughtfully rendered. The artist captures texture in both the drapery of the woman’s dress and the rustic stone of the fountain, while her tilted head and faraway gaze add psychological depth to an otherwise simple composition. This type of lithograph was popular in middle-class French homes, often collected for their beauty and emotional tone.
Lithography, with its ability to produce nuanced shading and soft transitions, was the perfect medium for such reflective scenes. The mood is tender and serene, and the overall composition is both balanced and expressive.
Condition report:
The print is in very good condition. The image area is clean and sharply printed. Light foxing is visible in the margins, especially on the left side, but the central scene remains unaffected. The paper is full and untrimmed, with minimal signs of age or wear.
Framing suggestions:
This delicate print would benefit from a simple gold or walnut frame, paired with a soft ivory or pale grey mat to enhance the tones of the paper and the softness of the subject. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the image. L’Attente would be well suited for display in bedrooms, reading rooms, or part of a collection focused on Romantic and genre prints.

Woman from Felanitx, Majorca – Hand-Colored Lithograph, Espagne & Portugal No.18, c.1845
Description:
This delicate hand-colored lithograph, titled Femme de Felanix (Majorque – Baléares), originates from the Espagne & Portugal series of the Musée de Costumes, published in Paris around 1845 by the Maison Aubert. Drawn by Laurent and engraved by A. Portier, this print is plate No. 18 in the collection, part of an ambitious 19th-century ethnographic project to document the diverse regional costumes of Europe.
The composition depicts a woman from Felanitx, a historic town in Majorca (Balearic Islands), shown in traditional attire typical of rural life on the island during the early 19th century. She wears a modest dress in muted tones of blue and white, with a full skirt and fitted bodice, covered by a plain apron and a headscarf that conceals her hair. The woman is portrayed holding a large clay jug, an everyday object used to carry water or wine, which situates her firmly in the context of domestic and agricultural labor. The pose—simple yet dignified—embodies the grace and fortitude of Balearic peasant women.
As part of the Musée de Costumes, this lithograph reflects the era’s fascination with ethnography and regional identity, as Europe’s scholars and artists sought to preserve local traditions amidst the rise of industrialization and urbanization. The hand-coloring—applied with soft pastel hues—brings to life the subtle textures of fabric, pottery, and skin tone. The print’s fine linework and delicate shading reveal the technical mastery of 19th-century French lithographic production, particularly under the direction of Maison Aubert, renowned for its series celebrating traditional European dress.
Condition report:
Very good condition with fresh, original coloring. Slight toning toward the upper margin and minimal foxing consistent with age, far from the image area. Wide original margins intact and the impression crisp and clean.
Framing tips:
This print displays beautifully when framed with a light ivory or pale gray mat and a gilt or wooden frame. A grouping with other Espagne & Portugal costume...
