About the Item
Napoleon I Polish Legion Infantry, Legion Polonaise Uniform Print 1843
This original 19th-century hand-colored military print depicts soldiers of the Polish Legion (Légion polonaise), Regiment of the Vistula, during the Napoleonic Wars, dated 1810. The plate originates from Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, published in Paris in 1843, with illustrations after Horace Vernet and related military artists. Although Napoleon Bonaparte himself is not shown, the scene is inseparably linked to Napoleon I and his Grande Armée, illustrating the multinational forces that fought under his command across Europe.
The composition shows Polish infantry in action, advancing with muskets amid a rocky landscape. Their uniforms—dark blue coats with contrasting facings, white breeches, tall shakos, and full campaign equipment—are rendered with great attention to historical accuracy. The Polish Legion held a special place within Napoleon’s army, symbolizing hopes for the restoration of an independent Poland and serving with distinction in campaigns in Italy, Germany, Spain, and Russia. This print reflects both the military reality of the period and the romanticized heroism associated with Napoleonic warfare.
Artistically, the plate combines precise line engraving with fine hand coloring, typical of high-quality French military publications of the mid-19th century. The figures are animated and expressive, with carefully modeled landscapes that enhance the sense of movement and tension. Such prints were intended both as historical documentation and as visual celebration of Napoleon’s armies, making them highly appealing to collectors of Napoleonic history, military costume, and European historical art.
This work is particularly suitable for collectors interested in Napoleon I, the Grande Armée, Polish military history, or 19th-century French illustrated books. It also works well as a standalone decorative piece, offering strong visual impact and clear historical narrative.
Condition report:
Good overall condition. Light age-related toning and scattered foxing, mostly in the margins. Minor edge wear consistent with age. Image area clean and well-preserved. No major tears or losses observed.
Framing tips:
Frame in a classic gilt or dark wood frame with a wide off-white or light grey mat to emphasize the hand coloring and retain a museum-style presentation. A double mat with a subtle inner line in dark blue or red can echo the uniform colors and enhance visual depth.
