About the Item

Elegant antique Engraving entitled L'Hiver (Winter), after a celebrated composition by Antoine Watteau (French, 1684-1721), one of the most influential painters of French Rococo art. The engraving artist is N. de Larmessin. The scene presents a classical garden landscape animated by gracefully dressed figures sheltering from winter weather. The composition is rich in detail: aristocratic figures gather near monumental architecture, urns, and bridges, while bare trees and wintry skies signal the season. Below the image, the French inscription reads "Engraved after the original painting by Watteau, 5 feet high and 8 feet wide", From the Cabinet of M. de Sullimne. Paris, near Freilisi". This inscription confirms this is an authorized reproductive engraving, made directly after Watteau's original painting. It documents the original painting's dimensions, a common scholarly practice in 18th century French prints. Print is framed in a giltwood frame that complements the monochrome engraving and enhances the classical elegance. In modern interiors, this engraving works beautifully in traditional or classical interiors, in transitional spaces to add historical depth, in libraires or hallways, or on gallery walls. its balanced scale and timeless subject make it an ideal decorative and scholarly piece.
