About the Item

Engraving by Louis Icart from 1920, "At the Carnival" model. In very good condition. The frame is new. Width: 79 cm Height: 59 cm Weight: 4 kg Louis Icart, born November 12, 1888 in Toulouse and died December 29, 1950 in Paris, was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. Artist's Career Impressed by his talents as a draughtsman, his aunt took him to Paris: she owned the Maison Valmont, a prominent milliner of the Belle Époque. Louis Icart was then introduced to the world of illustration for the fashion press. He drew for the periodical La Critique théâtrale and for the catalogs of haute couture houses. Trained in engraving, he presented his original works at the Salon des Humoristes: his portraits of women, Parisian women, began to attract the public; He has been compared to Paul César Helleu and Manuel Robbe. In 1920, he exhibited more than thirty paintings expressing an Art Deco style at the Simonson Gallery in Paris, and then, in 1922, at the Belmaison Gallery in New York. Following this exhibition, his prints enjoyed some success in America until 1932. He founded the limited company La Gravure Française in January 1934. The company incorporated an artists' studio he had founded. The 500-franc shares bear his autograph signature as a director. His work includes more than five hundred prints. He also participated in the illustration of some thirty books, including a good number of erotic works. During the Occupation, he created an engraved series entitled L'Exode. He died in 1950 at 1, place du Calvaire in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, where a plaque pays tribute to him.
