About the Item
Antique Architectural Engraving of the Louvre Grande Galerie Façade, Jean Marot, c.1670
This rare antique architectural engraving presents the elevation of the south façade of the Grande Galerie of the Louvre in Paris, as seen from the Seine. The design is captured in exquisite detail by Jean Marot (1619–1679), one of the most important French engravers of the 17th century. Issued around 1670 in Marot’s renowned series L’Architecture françoise, this plate records one of the most celebrated stretches of the Louvre palace, embodying the grandeur of French Baroque architecture during the reign of Louis XIV.
The elongated format reflects the vast scale of the gallery, which originally extended for more than 400 meters along the river. The façade is composed of rhythmic bays, framed by monumental pilasters and richly ornamented windows. At ground level, three elaborate portals are decorated with sculptural reliefs, while above, tall arched windows emphasize the gallery’s light-filled interior. Along the parapet runs a striking procession of statues, a hallmark of the design and a feature faithfully preserved in Marot’s engraving.
The Grande Galerie’s architecture originated in the late 16th century under Louis Métezeau and was later modified by Louis Le Vau in the 1660s. Marot’s engraving not only served as a record but also disseminated the image of the Louvre as a symbol of royal magnificence. Interestingly, the plate reproduces known anomalies in doorway placement compared with the actual structure, a detail that helps confirm its authenticity and historical value.
This engraving is both a document of architectural history and an artwork in its own right, representing the flourishing of French architectural print culture. Collectors and admirers of French Baroque design will find it an outstanding piece, suitable for display in both scholarly and decorative settings.
Condition report:
The print is in good condition with a clear, strong impression. Minor age toning and faint handling marks are visible in the margins, consistent with age. A horizontal fold in the lower part of the sheet is present but does not detract from the image. The engraving has been mounted to an old sheet of handmade paper with visible chain and laid lines, typical of 18th- or early 19th-century mounting practice. This provides additional support and reflects careful preservation of the print over time. Wide margins preserved.
Framing tips:
This elongated format is best displayed in a wide horizontal frame with an ivory or light cream mount to balance the proportions. A dark wood or ebonized frame will complement the strong architectural lines, while a gilt inner fillet can add a touch of regal refinement, echoing the grandeur of the Louvre.
