About the Item

Majestic Common Crane in Wetland Landscape – Antique Bird Chromolithograph c.1880 This striking late 19th-century ornithological chromolithograph depicts the common crane (Grus grus), shown standing gracefully in an open wetland landscape with shallow water, reeds, and distant birds in the background. The crane is presented in proud profile, its elongated neck, slender legs, and refined posture emphasizing the elegance for which this species is renowned. The common crane, also known as the European crane or grey crane, has long been admired as one of Europe’s most noble and symbolic birds. Associated with migration, longevity, and fidelity, cranes featured prominently in both scientific literature and cultural traditions. In this composition, the bird is identified as an adult male and rendered at approximately one-quarter natural size, in keeping with the educational purpose of the original publication. Produced using chromolithography, the print demonstrates the strengths of the technique through its soft atmospheric sky, subtle tonal gradations, and carefully layered colors. The cool greys and blues of the crane’s plumage contrast beautifully with the warm ochres and greens of the marshland setting. Fine detailing in the feathers, legs, and the distinctive red crown patch reflects the high standard of late 19th-century natural history illustration, where scientific accuracy and decorative appeal were closely combined. This print is particularly attractive to collectors of antique bird prints and European wildlife imagery, as well as to interior designers seeking a calm yet commanding statement piece. Its vertical format and serene color palette make it well suited for hallways, studies, libraries, or refined contemporary interiors inspired by nature. Condition report Good antique condition. Light foxing and mild age-related toning visible, mainly in the margins, consistent with chromolithographs of this period. The image area remains clean and well preserved, with no major tears or losses observed. Framing tips Best framed with a wide off-white or light grey mat and a simple black, dark walnut, or natural wood frame. This enhances the crane’s elegant silhouette and gives the print a classic, museum-style presentation. Gold gilded edges as issued. The common crane, also known as the Eurasian crane, is a bird of the family Gruidae, the cranes. A medium-sized species, it is the only crane commonly found in Europe besides the demoiselle crane and the Siberian crane that only are regular in the far eastern part of the continent. Biography: John Gould FRS (14 September 1804 – 3 February 1881) was an English ornithologist and bird artist. He published a number of monographs on birds, illustrated by plates that he produced with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. He has been considered the father of bird study in Australia and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. His identification of the birds now nicknamed "Darwin's finches" played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, "On the Origin of Species".
