About the Item

Male Nude Seen from Behind with Shield and Staff after de Lairesse c1745 This powerful academic study of the male nude originates from the German edition of Gérard de Lairesse’s influential drawing manual *Principes de dessin*, published in the mid-18th century, circa 1745. Gérard de Lairesse was among the most important artistic theorists of the late Baroque and early Enlightenment period, and his systematic approach to anatomy and classical proportion became foundational within European art academies. The plate depicts a standing male nude seen from behind, holding a shield in one hand and a vertical staff in the other. The pose is deliberately constructed to demonstrate the structure of the back, shoulders, hips, and legs, offering a clear study of musculature, balance, and contrapposto. The twist of the torso and the distribution of weight across the legs create a dynamic yet controlled composition, characteristic of academic figure studies based on classical sculpture. Executed as a line engraving with finely controlled cross-hatching, the figure is rendered with exceptional anatomical clarity and a strong sense of volume. Light and shadow are carefully modulated to articulate the musculature of the back and legs, while the restrained background ensures full focus on the figure itself. As with other plates from this series, the image serves as an instructional model for artists rather than a medical illustration, emphasizing idealized anatomy and classical harmony. Plates from the German editions of de Lairesse’s manuals were widely used in academies and workshops and were often heavily handled, making intact impressions increasingly scarce. Today, such works are sought after by collectors of academic art, classical figure studies, and Enlightenment-era instructional material, and they also function beautifully as stand-alone decorative works in both classical and modern interiors. Condition report: Good antique condition. Light, even age-related toning throughout the sheet. Minor scattered spotting and small stains, mainly in the margins. Some light handling wear and faint creases consistent with age. Margins present. The engraved image remains crisp and well-defined. A clear plate mark is visible. Framing tips: This print frames exceptionally well in both traditional and contemporary interiors. A walnut, dark-stained, or ebonized wooden frame with a wide off-white or light grey mat complements the warm tone of the paper and emphasizes the sculptural quality of the figure. Museum glass is recommended for protection and reduced glare. Technique: Line engraving Maker: After Gérard de Lairesse, from the German edition of *Principes de dessin*, circa 1745

Biedermeier Period Academic Life Study Male Nude Carrying A Staff Circa 1826
Located in Sutton Poyntz, Dorset
Eduard Braun. German ( b.1798 - d.1876 ). Academic Life Study Of A Male Nude Carrying A Staff. Pencil & Charcoal On Paper With Heightening. Annotation (presumably a dedication) Lower Left. Paper size 24 inches x 16.5 inches ( 61cm x 42cm ). Frame size 30.1 inches x 22.2 inches ( 76.5cm x 56.5cm ). Available for sale; this academic life drawing of a male nude is by the German artist Eduard Braun and dates from around 1826. The drawing is presented and supplied in an interesting configuration with a modern twist (which is shown in these photographs). The drawing has been float mounted between two sheets of Tru Vue Museum Glass® UV99 so that the wall or setting behind the hanging is visible and therefore provides the surround for the artwork. This antique drawing is in very good condition, commensurate with its age. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The drawing is not signed but came from a portfolio of drawings by Eduard Braun. This drawing has a later annotation and presumably a dedication in red ink in the bottom left hand corner. The annotation is the monogram HL within a heart. The configuration of the HL resembles the format used by the French artist Henri Laurens 1885 – 1954 where the downstroke of the L is merged with the second downstroke of the H. This stunning original pencil and charcoal drawing on paper is by a German artist called Eduard Braun. He was born in 1798 and died in 1876, but little else is known about him apart from the fact that he was active in the Paris art salons and rooms. This drawing is from a portfolio by this artist on a similar theme and is typical of the type of academic study undertaken by serious art students throughout the nineteenth century. One of the other drawings in this portfolio is annotated as being created in 1826 and there is every reason to think that this drawing is contemporaneous with that. The drawing is of a very high standard, capturing both strength and sensitivity, showcasing the artist’s ability to reproduce a lifelike image of a nude model. The subject of this drawing is a young man, possibly in his mid-twenties, with a toned and muscular body. He is standing with his weight on his right leg, which is slightly bent, and holding a wooden staff in his right hand. His left foot is raised slightly with the toes pointed, and his left hand is placed behind his back. Although he is facing fully towards the viewer, his gaze is to his left. He has pleasant, serene expression on his face. The background is bare, save for the shadow cast by the model. This original antique drawing...

Drölling Student Academic Life Study Of A Male Nude Framed 1840s French Drawing
Located in Sutton Poyntz, Dorset
Henry Arthur Roberts. French ( b.1819 - d.1900 ). Academic Life Study Of A Male Nude Carrying A Staff. Pencil & Charcoal On Paper. Paper size 23.4 inches x 13.6 inches ( 59.5cm x 34.5cm ). Frame size 28.3 inches x 18.7 inches ( 72cm x 47.5cm ). Available for sale; this academic life drawing of a male nude is by the French artist Henry Arthur Roberts and dates from the early 1840s. The drawing is presented and supplied in a modest hand painted glazed wooden frame dating from the mid-20th century (which is shown in these photographs). This antique drawing is in good condition, commensurate with its age. It is in an untouched condition having never been restored. The paper has handling marks, some light surface dirt, the odd foxing mark and general age toning. The overall patina adds to the aesthetic and is supplied ready to hang and display. The drawing is not signed but came from a portfolio of drawings by Henry Arthur Roberts. Henry Arthur Roberts was a recognised French artist, notable for his portraits and paintings of religious subjects. Born in Paris in 1819, he was the son of British watercolour artist James Roberts, himself active in Paris from 1819 -1846. Henry became a student of his father. Henry Roberts’s talent as a young man was such that he was accepted as a student of Michel Martin Drölling and worked extensively with him. Drölling, the highly acclaimed neoclassic artist (1786-1851) was noted for his theatrical paintings of history and grand portraits. He produced many notable works, including a ceiling work for the Louvre, and works in the Palace of Versailles. Roberts would have studied with Drölling at an early stage in his career, as Drölling died when Roberts was 32. Learning with such a master would have had a huge impact on Roberts in terms of his academic skills and his own emerging style. Roberts exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1839, when he was only 20 years old, right through to 1867. His work in the Universal Exhibition of 1855 won him a Third Class Medal. He became Vice-President of the Association of Artists in Paris and in July 1898 he was elevated to the rank of Knight of the Legion of Honour with a foreign title. This was the highest state honour available to him, in recognition of his status as an artist. Henry Roberts died in 1900, but his legacy lives on, with works in many famous public collections, including the Musée Carnavalet, the Musée du Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Orsay, and in Boston, USA. © Big Sky Fine Art This striking academic nude study...

Located in London, GB
Graphite on laid paper, signed verso and paper watermarks and atelier stamp Image size: 23 ¾ x 16 ¾ inches (60.25 x 43.5 cm) Gilt Whistler frame Leon Bellemont Born on August 20, 1866, in the family home on rue du Grand-Cloître, Léon Bellemont studied from 1875 to 1883 at the Diderot college, where he was an excellent student. At the same time, he joined the municipal drawing school, where his exceptional predispositions were very quickly noted. In 1884, at the age of 18, Léon Bellemont left Langres to join Paris and its National School of Decorative Arts, then the prestigious Ecole des Beaux-Arts. There, he followed the teaching of Léon Bonnat, a renowned portraitist, and obtained his first rewards and several prizes. It was in 1892, however, that his artistic career took off, with his first participation in the Salon des artistes français, where he exhibited until 1956. A landscape and impressionist painter, particularly impressing marine worlds, Léon Bellemont stayed more and more regularly in Brittany at the beginning of the 20th century, where he painted numerous paintings. His notoriety grew, as did the profits from his sales, and the State itself ended up placing a few orders with him. His work “The Breton Faith” was, for example, acquired by the museum in Buenos Aires (Argentina). Subsequently, always in search of inspiration, Léon Bellemont travelled extensively. He was in Bruges from 1907 to 1909, then traveled across France for several years participating in exhibitions. During the First World War, he settled in Algiers where he remained for several years. He then returned to Paris, worked extensively there and achieved great fame. A socialite, he frequented salons and regularly received his friends Jules Adler...
