About the Item
Rare and extraordinary, this signed print by Andrey Avinoff is one of a set he created for "The Fall of Atlantis," a monumental and fantastical poem by George Golokhvastoff published in 1944. Each of Avinoff's images centered around a handsome, lithe nude male youth -- The Spirit of Atlantis -- shown here superimposed over the apex of an Art Deco skyscraper, his arms crossed overhead and his body enveloped in a star-shaped plume of light. Dramatic clouds are scudding overhead, and an enormous ankh symbol hovers in the sky. Avinoff was born in Russia and played an important role in the Czar's government, but the Communist revolution prompted him to make a new home in America. He was an artist-scientist, directing the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, becoming known around the world for his knowledge of butterflies, and creating remarkable art such as this print. (Dimensions include matte and frame; image itself is 14 inches high by 10.5 inches wide.).
