About the Item
Maurits, Prins van Oranje – Portrait of Prince Maurice of Orange c.1748
This antique print depicts Maurice, Prince of Orange, shown in half-length facing to the right. He wears ornate armour with a decorative sash draped over his right shoulder and a stiff lace ruff around his neck. His stern yet dignified expression reflects his status as a leading military commander and statesman of the Dutch Republic. The portrait is set within an elaborately engraved oval frame surrounded by symbols of warfare, including cannons, cannonballs, flags, shields, and armour, emphasising his martial achievements. Below the portrait is a detailed battle scene, commemorating his numerous victories against Spanish forces during the Eighty Years’ War.
The original painting was by Michiel Jansz. Mierevelt, one of the leading Dutch portraitists of the early 17th century. This engraving was published by Pieter Tanjé in Amsterdam in 1748, over a century later, as part of a series celebrating important figures in Dutch history. Tanjé was renowned for his refined line work and ability to reproduce the texture and dignity of painted portraits in print form. Portraits such as this were popular collector’s items in the 18th century, used to display loyalty to the House of Orange and to commemorate the Republic’s military leaders.
The technique used is engraving, involving precise incising of the image onto a copper plate, which was then inked and pressed onto paper to produce highly detailed and crisp prints ideal for portraits and historical commemorations.
Condition summary: Very good condition with strong impressions and clean paper. Minor age-toning and a few faint spots of foxing near the edges but no tears or repairs. Paper remains firm and stable with ample margins.
Framing tips: This engraving will suit a classic off-white or warm cream mount. Choose a dark oak, black, or gilt frame with subtle decorative edges to emphasise its 18th-century character and historical importance. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the fine engraved lines over time.
