About the Item

Saint Francis of Paola, engraving by Antonio Gramignani, Rome, circa 1670–1690 Description: This devotional engraving by Antonio Gramignani (active Rome, late 17th century) depicts Saint Francis of Paola (1416–1507), founder of the Order of Minims. The saint is shown in a niche, barefoot and robed, holding a staff, while a cherub presents lilies at his feet. Above, a radiant sunburst bears the word CHARITAS, the central virtue of the Minims. The Latin dedication below identifies the print as a tribute to Baron Giovanni Battista d’Asté, commemorating the statue of St. Francis of Paola erected in St. Peter’s Basilica at the expense of the Minims. The text praises the saint’s reputation for charity and notes his divine gifts as founder of the order. Translation of the inscription: “To the most illustrious Baron Giovanni Battista d’Asté, in whose honor, in the Vatican Basilica, was erected at the expense of the Order of Minims, under the emblem of Charity, this representation is dedicated by a brother of the same family of Minims, distinguished in charity. It depicts the marble statue of Saint Francis of Paola, founder, endowed by God with divine gifts, as a memorial of devotion from the Church of the Most Holy Savior of the Roman Court. Engraved by Antonio Gramignani.” Condition: Good, with plate mark visible. Some toning and light wear consistent with age. Crisp and finely detailed impression, although ink somewhat faded. Margins cut short. Framing tips: Best presented in a dark wood or ebonized frame with an ivory mount. A narrow gilt inner border may enhance its devotional presence. Technique: Engraving Maker: Antonio Gramignani, Rome, circa 1670–1690
