Title: Statues of Guardian Deities – Plate VIII, Section VIII Description: This monochrome lithograph showcases two dynamic and imposing statues of traditional Japanese guardian deities, known as Niō (仁王). These fierce-looking figures are depicted in powerful stances, each exuding strength and vigilance. The statues exhibit exceptional detail, from the rippling musculature to the intricate folds of their garments. The figure on the left appears in a defensive posture with one hand raised in a gesture of warning, while the figure on the right brandishes an arm, suggesting readiness for action. Both statues reflect the classic iconography of Niō, protectors of Buddhist temples, and embodying the balance of fearsome strength and divine guardianship. Produced by Sampson Low Co. and printed by Lemercier Cie, Paris, this lithograph highlights the artistry and cultural significance of traditional Japanese sculptural works.
