About the Item

Antique engraving of Nagasaki procession, Japan by Langsdorff, 1812 This finely detailed engraving depicts a ceremonial procession in Nagasaki, Japan, observed during the Russian embassy of the early 19th century. The scene shows the landing of the delegation on the “audience day” and their formal journey towards the governor, accompanied by Japanese officials and guards. The image captures both the architectural setting of Nagasaki’s harbor quarter and the highly ritualized atmosphere of diplomatic encounters during Japan’s period of restricted foreign contact. The print was issued in Georg Heinrich von Langsdorff’s *Bemerkungen auf einer Reise um die Welt in den Jahren 1803 bis 1807* (Frankfurt am Main, 1812). Langsdorff (1774–1852) was a German naturalist and physician who joined the first Russian circumnavigation under Adam Johann von Krusenstern. His account contains rare visual records of Japan during the Tokugawa period, at a time when foreign visitors were strictly controlled. The engraving offers a rare glimpse into Edo-period ceremonial life in Nagasaki, with its orderly composition, procession of figures in traditional robes, and the harbor foreground filled with decorated vessels. Such images were among the earliest views of Japan made accessible to European readers and remain significant for collectors of Japanese history, voyages, and early 19th-century exploration. Condition report: Very good impression on laid paper with wide margins. Light toning to edges and minor handling creases, otherwise clean and well preserved. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: An elegant display can be achieved with a double mat in ivory or soft cream, paired with a thin black or charcoal inner border to enhance the engraving’s detail. A dark walnut or black frame will lend a museum-quality finish, while a gilt liner adds sophistication and highlights the ceremonial character of the scene. Technique: Engraving Maker: G.H. Langsdorff, Frankfurt am Main, 1812
