About the Item

Napoleon Crossing the Great St Bernard Pass – Alpine Campaign Engraving c.1840 This iconic 19th-century French engraving depicts one of the most celebrated episodes of Napoleon’s military legend: the crossing of the Great St Bernard Pass during the Italian campaign. Set against a dramatic alpine backdrop, the composition combines rugged mountain scenery with a carefully staged procession of soldiers, officers, and artillery, emphasizing endurance, leadership, and strategic resolve. Napoleon appears calmly authoritative amid the challenging terrain, embodying command and determination in the face of nature. Visually, the engraving is exceptionally strong and immediately recognizable. The sweeping mountain landscape provides depth and scale, while the disciplined movement of the troops creates a sense of momentum across the composition. The restrained monochrome palette and fine engraved lines give the image a timeless, graphic clarity that works equally well in classical interiors and contemporary spaces. As a wall piece, it functions as both a powerful historical statement and a refined decorative image, particularly suited to libraries, offices, studies, and large feature walls. Historically, the scene refers to the 1800 crossing of the Great St Bernard Pass, a daring logistical and strategic maneuver that allowed Napoleon to surprise Austrian forces in northern Italy and ultimately secure victory at Marengo. The engraving itself was produced several decades later as part of the Galerie Historique de Versailles, a major national project initiated under King Louis-Philippe to commemorate defining moments in French history. Rather than a literal eyewitness record, the image reflects the Romantic-era interpretation of Napoleon as a heroic and visionary leader. The composition is after a painting by Adolphe Roehn, a leading French historical painter renowned for his Napoleonic subjects. It was engraved by François for publication by Gavard in Paris as part of the Versailles series. While conceived as one plate within a larger cycle illustrating Napoleon’s career, this engraving stands confidently on its own and is widely regarded as one of the most visually compelling and decorative images of the series. Condition: Good antique condition. Light foxing and age-related toning to the margins, consistent with age. The engraved image is clean, well-defined, and shows a clear plate mark. Framing suggestions: This print benefits from a generous off-white or soft grey mat to balance the dramatic mountain landscape. A black, dark walnut, or ebonized frame enhances contrast and reinforces the heroic character of the scene. Technique: Steel engraving Maker: After Adolphe Roehn, engraved by François, published by Gavard, France, circa 1838–1848
