About the Item

This collection features three exquisite 19th-century steel engravings depicting key battles and sieges from the Napoleonic Wars. These prints, created by Théodore Yung and originating from the Album de Vingt Batailles de la Révolution et de l'Empire, showcase moments of historical significance, skillfully captured with artistic precision and hand-painted watercolors. 1. Bataille de la Corogne (16 Janvier 1809): This print depicts the Battle of Corunna, where the French army under Marshal Soult attacked British forces commanded by Sir John Moore during their retreat. The battle, fought on January 16, 1809, marked a key moment in the Peninsular War, with the British successfully evacuating but losing their commander. The artwork highlights infantry and cavalry formations against the rugged Spanish landscape, evoking the tension of the battlefield. 2. Prise de Gaëte (1806): This engraving illustrates the Siege of Gaeta, where French forces led by Marshal Masséna besieged and captured the Neapolitan fortress during the War of the Third Coalition. The scene emphasizes the strategic significance of this coastal stronghold, with detailed depictions of fortifications, military maneuvers, and the surrounding terrain. 3. Third Print: The final engraving depicts an unidentified battle or siege, likely another significant engagement from the Napoleonic Wars. The intricate details of troop movements, cavalry, and terrain suggest a connection to the battles covered in the Album de Vingt Batailles. These steel engravings, published circa 1860 by Henri Plon in Paris, combine historical documentation with artistic mastery. The prints are preserved in very good condition, with vibrant colors and minimal signs of aging. They are a valuable addition for collectors of military history, Napoleonic-era artwork, or 19th-century steel engravings. This compilation provides a vivid portrayal of the drama and complexity of early 19th-century warfare.
