About the Item

Napoleonic Infantry Soldiers – Sapper, Cannoneer, Voltigeur, Fusilier, 1859 This detailed set of three hand-colored lithographs presents foot soldiers of Napoleon’s Imperial Guard, depicted in action and repose. These prints come from the 1859 Paris edition of Napoléon Ier et la Garde Impériale, with historical text by military archivist Eugène Fieffé and illustrations by Auguste Raffet, one of the 19th century’s leading military artists. The engravings were executed with finesse by Charles Colin. The first plate shows a Sapeur du Génie and a Canonier à Pied engaged in conversation. The sapper, with his distinctive leather apron and metal helmet topped with a plume, represents the engineering troops responsible for fortifications and demolitions. The foot artilleryman wears a similar dark blue uniform and is armed with a musket, showing the essential blend of technical and combat roles within the Imperial Guard. In the second lithograph, the focus shifts to skirmishers in motion. A Tirailleur and Voltigeur advance through brush and uneven terrain, rifles drawn, eyes set on the enemy. These light infantry troops were deployed ahead of the main army to engage in quick, agile attacks. Their uniforms are slightly lighter and more flexible, designed for movement and speed. The vivid blue and white contrasts with red piping and plumes evoke the striking style of the era. The final image features two Fusiliers – one a Chasseur and the other a Grenadier. Shown on the march, they represent the backbone of the line infantry. Their tall shakos, polished white gaiters, and neat shoulder straps typify the formal military discipline instilled throughout Napoleon’s forces. Auguste Raffet (1804–1860) trained under Gros and was praised for his ability to combine realism and romanticism in his depictions of military life. His scenes remain highly sought after by collectors for their historic accuracy and fine composition. Condition Good condition with minor foxing in margins. No tears or folds. Image areas are clean with vibrant color preservation and well-defined plate marks. Framing tips Frame as a matching set using ivory or pale grey mounts and simple black or natural wood frames. Earthy wall tones or deep blue backgrounds enhance the uniforms’ colors and historical context. Suitable for office, study, or military-themed interior spaces.

Napoleonic Imperial Guard Grenadiers, Officer and Soldier – French Prints, 1843

Napoleonic Imperial Guard Grenadiers, Officer and Soldier – French Prints Description: This fine pair of hand-colored 19th-century prints depicts members of Napoleon Bonaparte’s elite Imperial Guard Grenadiers, one of the most prestigious and recognizable units of the Napoleonic army. On the left, an officer and a soldier of the Guard are shown standing and conversing, their uniforms rendered with careful attention to rank, posture, and insignia. On the right, a fusilier grenadier of the Imperial Guard is depicted in full dress (grande tenue), standing alone in a composed, almost ceremonial stance. The Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard were the embodiment of Napoleonic military prestige. Selected for their experience, discipline, and physical stature, they served both as an elite fighting force and as a visual symbol of imperial authority. These prints emphasize uniform details such as the bearskin-style headgear with plumes, cross-belts, muskets, gaiters, and the distinctive color palette of the Guard, making them valuable visual documents for historians, collectors, and military uniform specialists. The prints originate from *Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon* by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, published in Paris in 1843, with illustrations after designs by Horace Vernet. Vernet was the foremost visual chronicler of Napoleonic France, and his imagery played a key role in shaping the 19th-century perception of Napoleon’s army, balancing historical accuracy with heroic idealization. These works were intended not only as book illustrations but also as standalone images suitable for framing, which explains their refined execution and enduring decorative appeal. Offered together, this pair forms a coherent and highly attractive set, ideal for collectors of Napoleonic history, French military art...
