About the Item

Napoleonic Military Uniforms – French Cavalry, Artillery, and Veteran, 1859 This finely composed set of three hand-colored lithographs presents uniformed figures from Napoleon’s Imperial Guard, captured in exquisite detail by the acclaimed military illustrator Auguste Raffet. These prints were published in Paris in 1859 by Furne Fils as part of the historical work "Napoléon Ier et la Garde Impériale," with accompanying text by Eugène Fieffé, drawn from the official archives of the French Ministry of War. Each image portrays a distinct role within the elite forces of Napoleon’s army: The first plate, titled “Vétéran,” shows a decorated infantry soldier standing with pride, engaging warmly with two children dressed in miniature soldier outfits. The setting suggests a peaceful moment at home, symbolizing honor, service, and legacy. The soldier’s white trousers, blue coat, red epaulettes, and tall plume-topped shako reflect the formal uniform style of the era. The second plate, “Gendarme d’Élite,” depicts a mounted officer in full ceremonial regalia, sword in hand, riding before a marching formation. His richly adorned uniform, complete with a fur-crested helmet and blue dolman jacket, captures the elite stature and disciplined bearing of the gendarmerie units. The third plate, “Artillerie à Cheval – Maréchal des Logis,” features a dashing mounted artillery officer leading a formation. Wearing an ornate hussar-style jacket with gold braiding, red plume, and military sash, he embodies the flair and precision associated with Napoleonic horse artillery. All three lithographs were engraved by Charles Colin after the original works by Raffet, whose masterful command of line and historical accuracy has made him one of the most respected military artists of the 19th century. These prints provide a vivid window into the hierarchy, pageantry, and symbolism of the Imperial Guard, making them highly desirable for collectors of military art and Napoleonic history. Condition: Good overall. Minor foxing, mostly in outer margins. Images remain clean and sharply defined with bright hand coloring. Framing tips: Frame together in a horizontal row or as standalone pieces. Use ivory or cream mounts with a classic gilt or dark wood frame to enhance the historical character. Deep blue or neutral-toned walls will complement the uniforms’ detail and coloring.

Napoleonic Imperial Guard Grenadiers, Officer and Soldier – French Prints, 1843
Located in Langweer, NL
Napoleonic Imperial Guard Grenadiers, Officer and Soldier – French Prints Description: This fine pair of hand-colored 19th-century prints depicts members of Napoleon Bonaparte’s elite Imperial Guard Grenadiers, one of the most prestigious and recognizable units of the Napoleonic army. On the left, an officer and a soldier of the Guard are shown standing and conversing, their uniforms rendered with careful attention to rank, posture, and insignia. On the right, a fusilier grenadier of the Imperial Guard is depicted in full dress (grande tenue), standing alone in a composed, almost ceremonial stance. The Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard were the embodiment of Napoleonic military prestige. Selected for their experience, discipline, and physical stature, they served both as an elite fighting force and as a visual symbol of imperial authority. These prints emphasize uniform details such as the bearskin-style headgear with plumes, cross-belts, muskets, gaiters, and the distinctive color palette of the Guard, making them valuable visual documents for historians, collectors, and military uniform specialists. The prints originate from *Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon* by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, published in Paris in 1843, with illustrations after designs by Horace Vernet. Vernet was the foremost visual chronicler of Napoleonic France, and his imagery played a key role in shaping the 19th-century perception of Napoleon’s army, balancing historical accuracy with heroic idealization. These works were intended not only as book illustrations but also as standalone images suitable for framing, which explains their refined execution and enduring decorative appeal. Offered together, this pair forms a coherent and highly attractive set, ideal for collectors of Napoleonic history, French military art...
