About the Item

Vue des Restes d’un Temple de Vénus, Isle de Nisida – Antique Engraved Gulf of Naples View (1760s) This impressive 18th-century French engraving presents a sweeping coastal view of the Isle of Nisida near Pozzuoli, depicting the atmospheric ruins traditionally attributed to a Temple of Venus. The composition combines classical subject matter with lively maritime activity: fishermen haul nets in the foreground, boats glide across the Bay of Naples, and distant buildings and mountainous silhouettes complete the expansive landscape. The scene belongs to the highly regarded school of engraved Neapolitan views produced for the French aristocratic market in the mid-18th century, often after works by Vernet, Boulogne or Bourguignon, and executed by leading engravers such as Le Mire. The engraving is rich in detail, from the meticulous linework of the crumbling ruins to the luminous treatment of sky and water typical of the period’s master printmakers. The lower caption cartouche, flanked by coats of arms and decorative emblems, underscores the print’s origin in prestigious artistic publishing circles connected to the Cabinet du Roi. Large-format Neapolitan coastal views from this era remain highly desirable for their combination of classical archaeology, maritime life and grand 18th-century landscape aesthetics. This example, with its full margins and strong impression, has excellent decorative presence. Condition report: Good condition overall. Strong and crisp impression. Scattered foxing throughout margins and visible in lighter areas of the sky, typical for 18th-century laid paper. Light handling creases near the right margin. No tears, losses or repairs. Plate mark clear and margins wide. Framing tips: A warm walnut or lightly distressed gold frame suits the 18th-century character of the print and complements its tonal contrasts. A cream or light ivory mat will soften the foxing in the margins and draw focus toward the central image. For a cleaner contemporary presentation, a thin black frame with a wide white mat provides crisp contrast while preserving the historic feel. Technique: Engraving Maker: After an 18th-century Neapolitan view; engraved in France, c.1760s
