About the Item
Neptune and Marine Deities, Roman Sea Gods and Reliefs – Montfaucon, 1721
A striking and visually rich antiquarian engraving illustrating Neptune and a wide range of marine deities, mythological sea creatures, sculptural reliefs, statues, and ancient medallions, drawn from classical Roman antiquity. This plate forms part of Bernard de Montfaucon’s monumental scholarly work *Antiquity Explained and Represented in Sculptures*, first published in the early 18th century and regarded as one of the foundational publications of modern archaeology and classical studies.
The composition presents a comprehensive visual survey of Neptune iconography: seated and standing figures of the sea god, tritons, sea monsters, marine processions, and relief fragments, interspersed with circular medallions reproducing ancient coins and gems. Larger sculptural scenes are combined with finely engraved numismatic studies, creating a dense and highly decorative plate that reflects Montfaucon’s method of comparative antiquarian analysis. The engravings were executed after classical models recorded in major Roman collections and archaeological sites, intended to document ancient sculpture with scholarly precision.
Printed as a double-page plate, this engraving retains the original vertical center fold, as issued, typical for larger plates in the Montfaucon volumes. The scale, subject matter, and compositional richness make this one of the more visually impactful plates from the series, particularly appealing to collectors interested in classical mythology, Roman art, and early archaeological illustration. It is equally suitable for display in refined classical interiors, libraries, or curated gallery walls.
Condition report: Original 18th-century impression on laid paper. Central vertical fold as issued. Age-related toning and mild edge wear consistent with age. Overall good condition with strong, clear impressions throughout.
Framing tips: This plate benefits from a wide mat to accommodate the fold and visual complexity. An off-white or warm cream mat with a subtle linen texture works well. Frame in dark walnut, ebonized wood, or antique gold to enhance the classical subject matter without overpowering the engraving.
