About the Item

New Orleans Harbor, Mississippi River Shipping and Steamers – Antique Engraving This finely engraved 19th-century view presents a bustling panorama of New Orleans seen from the Mississippi River at the height of the city’s commercial expansion. The composition captures the riverfront alive with activity: sailing vessels, early steamships emitting thick plumes of smoke, riverboats, and dockside laborers loading barrels and crates beneath temporary canvas awnings. The scene reflects New Orleans’ role as one of the most important ports in North America during the mid-19th century, serving as a vital gateway between the interior of the United States and international trade routes. The print was engraved by D. G. Thompson after a drawing by A. R. Waud and published by Cassell, Petter Galpin in London. Alfred R. Waud was among the most respected illustrators of his generation, known for his detailed observational drawings of American life, industry, and landscapes. His works formed the visual record of a rapidly modernizing America, and this New Orleans view is a strong example of his ability to combine architectural accuracy with narrative detail. In the background, the dense skyline of warehouses, factories, and church towers underscores the city’s industrial momentum, while the prominent steamboats—symbols of technological progress—highlight the transition from sail to steam. The careful engraving conveys texture and atmosphere: rippling water, rigging lines, smoke drifting across the sky, and the contrast between human scale and industrial infrastructure. Together, these elements create a vivid documentary image of river commerce before the Civil War era reshaped the American South. This engraving was issued for a wide European audience and reflects 19th-century fascination with the economic promise of the United States. As such, it appeals not only to collectors of American views, but also to those interested in maritime history, industrial heritage, and early visual journalism. The balanced horizontal format makes it particularly well suited for framing above a desk, sideboard, or as part of a gallery wall focused on American or port-city themes. Condition report Good antique condition. Light age toning and faint spotting in the margins, consistent with age. The image itself is strong and clear, with good contrast. A visible plate mark is present. No major tears or losses observed. Framing suggestions This print works beautifully in a classic black or dark walnut frame with a wide off-white or light grey mat to emphasize the engraved detail. A double mat with a darker inner line can enhance depth and complement traditional or library interiors. Technique: Steel engraving Maker: D. G. Thompson after A. R. Waud, London, c. mid-19th century
