About the Item
Officer d’Ordonnance de l’Empereur, French Imperial Guard Cavalry Print, 1843
This finely executed hand-coloured lithograph depicts an Officer d’Ordonnance de l’Empereur, a mounted staff officer serving directly under Napoleon during the height of the Empire. Issued in 1843 as part of the celebrated post-Napoleonic uniform series after Hippolyte Bellangé, the print documents the appearance and ceremonial authority of imperial aides-de-camp during the campaigns of the early 19th century.
The officer is shown mounted on a powerful charger, captured mid-motion, emphasizing both command presence and mobility. His richly detailed uniform reflects the elite status of ordonnance officers: a dark blue habit with elaborate gold embroidery, sash, epaulettes, and bicorne hat, combined with a leopard-skin saddlecloth traditionally associated with senior command and proximity to the Emperor. The scene conveys authority rather than battlefield chaos, underscoring the role of these officers as messengers, coordinators, and trusted representatives of Napoleon himself.
Although the uniform refers to the 1812–1814 period, the print belongs to the important 1843 publication wave that revived interest in Napoleonic history following the fall of the Empire. These later impressions were prized for their accuracy, decorative appeal, and historical documentation, and were widely collected by military historians, officers, and bibliophiles throughout the 19th century.
Artistically, the composition balances dynamic movement with clarity of costume detail. The horse is rendered with particular care, a hallmark of Bellangé’s work, and the subtle background figures reinforce the military context without distracting from the central figure. This plate forms part of a broader visual record of Imperial Guard and staff uniforms that remains a key reference source today.
This print is especially appealing to collectors of Napoleonic material, French military history, and 19th-century hand-coloured lithography. It also works exceptionally well as a decorative object, lending authority and historical depth to both classic and contemporary interiors.
Condition
Good antique condition. Light overall age toning to the paper, with minor scattered spotting and faint handling marks consistent with mid-19th-century impressions. Colours remain fresh and well-preserved. Plate mark visible.
Framing tips
This print presents beautifully in a dark walnut or ebonized frame with a wide off-white or warm ivory mat to emphasize the margins and enhance the contrast of the uniform colours. For a more dramatic interior, a charcoal or deep blue mat can echo the tones of the uniform while maintaining an elegant, museum-style presentation.
