About the Item
Optica View The Hague Scheveningsebrug
Noordeinde, c.1770
This is a finely engraved and hand-colored optical print titled '’t Gesight van de Schevelingse Brug komende uyt het Noordeinde. Vue du Pont de Scheveling lors qu’on sort du Nordeinde', published circa 1770. The scene depicts the Scheveningsebrug bridge as seen from the Noordeinde in The Hague.
The perspective shows an elegant street view with a richly decorated arched gate at the end, leading towards the Scheveningseweg. The scene is populated with finely dressed figures in 18th-century costume, including horse riders, pedestrians, and groups conversing in the street. To the right is a stepped gable building with shuttered windows and a horse being prepared. The engraving is vibrantly hand-colored with blue skies, ochre and red rooftops, and detailed architectural features typical of Dutch urban landscapes.
Optica prints (vues d’optique) were perspective engravings designed to be viewed through a zograscope to create a three-dimensional illusion. These popular prints depicted major European cityscapes and streets for educational and decorative purposes and were sold by publishers in Augsburg, Paris, and London.
Condition report:
Good condition. Strong impression with vivid period hand coloring. Light general age toning, faint scattered spots, and minor marginal handling marks typical for 18th-century optical prints. Wide margins intact with no tears or repairs affecting the image.
Framing suggestion:
Frame with a simple black or dark wood moulding and an archival off-white or cream mat to emphasize the rich coloring and linear perspective. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve color vibrancy and paper quality.
